about

The Caliopians song “Another Mother's Child in Trouble” is written to change the way people think of our fellow citizens who happen to be unhoused. It’s a story song to illuminate the fact that, despite whatever issues might have led a person to be camped in front of your apartment, they share the same personhood as you. That they are another mother’s child in trouble.

lyrics

There John sits with his hose and bits
Leaving out his kit he needs to make his fix
But he's not in a private space
As passersby pick up their pace
looking anywhere but in his face
Avoiding his world that's in their way
On the sidewalk where John spends his day

He's some mother's child in trouble , another mothers child in trouble
In his squalor and five years stumble, in his squalor and five years stumble
He's some mother's child in trouble , another mothers child in trouble
Left out of our gilt edged bubble

Now John might be our relation, or of anyone in the nation
But our empathy is ration, by our heartless calculation, our heartless calculation

Now down the block, you can hear Jane rock
As the words come spinning from her head
Drowning out what those voices said
Telling Jane you've already died
That no one missed her no one cried
At least no one who still lives inside

Jane's some mother's child in trouble, another mother's child in trouble
A soul lost in the rubble, another lost soul in the rubble
She's some mother's child in trouble, another mother's child in trouble
As she shouts and cries and mumbles, as she shouts and cries and mumbles

And am I I any different than you , If just talking about It is all that I do

It’s a crisis, I didn’t make it
Don’t be so self righteous, I don’t have to take it
It's the same situation, all across the nation
But your in front of my place, and I no longer feel safe,
So what else can I do but call the cops on you

To stay warm and dry Johns on the bus
But some rider starts to make a fuss
Seems his jumbled cart is in they’re way
All about the fare he never paid
And no one has a kind word to say
As Johns spirit turns a bleaker shade of grey

He's some mother's child in trouble, another mothers child in trouble
In his squalor and five years stumble, in his squalor and five years stumble
She's some mother's child in trouble, another mother's child in trouble

about

The Caliopians San Francisco, California

Cali, as we are a California band, full of the sounds of the southern desert, the coastal surf towns, Bakersfield twang, and the inner city we live in. Opians, cause we have a big place in our hearts and heads for Ethiopian jazz, and Afro Cuban diaspora sounds. A big slice of Klezmer, and what ever else falls into our listening life. ... more
